Thich Nhat Hanh

Living
Buddha, Living Christ
Philosophy and Religion Editor's Recommended Book
If you have always assumed that Christianity and
Buddhism are as far apart philosophically as their respective founders were geographically, you may be in for a bit of
a surprise. In this national bestseller, Zen monk and social activist Thich Nhat Hanh
draws parallels between these two traditions that have them walking, hand in hand, down
the same path to salvation. In Christianity, he finds mindfulness in the Holy Spirit as an
agent of healing. In Buddhism, he finds unqualified love in the form of compassion for all
living things. And in both he finds an emphasis on living practice and community spirit.
The thread that binds the book is the same theme
that draws many Christians toward Buddhism: mindfulness. Through anecdotes, scripture
references, and teachings from both traditions, Nhat Hanh points out that mindfulness is
an integral part of all religious practice and teaches us how to cultivate it in our own
lives. Nhat Hanh has no desire to downplay the venerable theological and ritual teachings
that distinguish Buddhism and Christianity, but he does cause one to consider that beyond
the letter of doctrine lies a unity of truth.

Our state of mind can make the world a peaceful place.
One of the most important books ever written. Pilgrims Way
Catalog
Being Peace has become a classic of contemporary religious literature. In his simple
and very readable style, Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how our state of mind and body can make
the world a peaceful place. In the rush of modern life, we often lose touch with the peace
that is already available. We learn to use the very situations that pressure and
antagonize ustraffic jams, a ringing telephone, dirty dishesand transform them
into opportunities for the practice of mindfulness. The deepest satisfactions lie as close
as our next aware breath.

Heart of the
Buddha's Teaching : Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, & Liberation
Thich Nhat Hahn is well-known for the simplicity and
clarity with which he presents Buddhist teachings. Now he brings that spirit to his own
introduction to Buddhism, introducing--in a way that is at once utterly lucid and entirely
original--the life of Buddha, the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, and the Doctrine
of Emptiness.
A reader from Cleveland, Ohio , September 7, 1998
An EXCELLENT book, Thich Nhat Hanh is a wonderful teacher.
The best book on Buddhism I have ever read. Thich Nhat Hanh presents the essential
teachings of Buddhism in a way that really makes it come alive. The way he presents the
four noble truths and eight-fold path are written with a minimum of fuss and jargon. He
points out the mutations Buddhism experienced in its oral transmission over the centuries.
His argument for critical thinking while reading Buddhist texts is very important reminder
that errors in transmission do exist. The material displays not only his intellectual
ability as a scholar but also his incredible compassion. He doesn't just write about
Buddhism, he lives it.

Teachings on
Love
Amazon.com
For venerated Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, love is more than an emotion.
Drawing on millennia of Buddhist wisdom and his own therapeutic methods, Teachings on Love further
develops his practical notion of interbeing in terms of love. If all things are
interrelated, what could be more paramount to negotiating those relations than love? And
more than just a way of relating, love is a way of living: "Love by the way you walk,
the way you sit, the way you eat." Nhat Hanh supports his practical advice with
numerous verses for enhancing mindfulness, prostrations for expressing reverence, and
succinct formulas, such as the Five Awarenesses and the Five Mindfulness Trainings. The
fifth mindfulness training exemplifies the broad scope of Nhat Hanh's love: "Aware of
the suffering caused by unmindful consumption, I am committed to cultivating good health,
both physical and mental, for myself, my family, and my society by practicing mindful
eating, drinking, and consuming." Thich Nhat Hanh forever writes with reassuring
warmth, from which readers may derive insight as well as comfort.
